Welcome to the Padget One Name Study (and it's variants)
The Name Padget is said to have come from the Middle English diminutive of "Page" or "Paige.
There seems to be various theories as to the origin of the name. Some say that the name was brought to England by the Padget Family when they came to England after the Norman Conquest in 1066. Other theories are that the name originated in Yorkshire.I am starting my search in Yorkshire where my Ancestors originated from and then looking at the remainder of the UK. The next step from here will be looking at migration and where my ancestors migrated to.
I will also be looking at the variants Padgett, Padgit, Padgitt, Paget, Patchet, Patchett, Patchit and Patchitt. These names have been used intermittently throughout history for the same families.
The study was registered with the Guild of One Name Studies in March 2024 so is a relatively new study. Initially I have been working on collecting data and have collected data from the GRO for births, deaths and marriages for 1837 to 1983 and 1984 to 1992.
I have also created an initial family tree.
Famous people with these names are:
- Sir James Paget, 1st Baronet
- Doug Padgett (1934-2024) English cricketer
- Don Padgett (1911-1980 American baseball player
- Lord Alfred Paget (1816-1888) British soldier, courtier and politician
- Rosalind Paget (1855-1948) British nurse, midwife and reformer
- Lady Caroline Paget (1913-1973) British socialite and actress
